  1. Helllo!
Glad to see that it worked for you :) question? Did the pounds stay off? and did you try it again? after the 4 days? I am going to be doing it this week and plan to do it for 1 month 3 on 4 off.

    1. Hi
My doctor suggested I try this diet to help get rid of some excess weight mainly bc of my back and neck issues. I tried and i only lost 5 pounds on it. Then started it again and didn't lose anything. I am going to try again starting tomorrow and modify my 'off' days to really watch what I eat and also to work on toning up my body to see if there is a difference in 'kicking' it up a notch and try to burn extra calories. Will keep you posted.

  2. Crys,

Yes it did stay off. The days in between I was watching my calorie intake and only taking in about 1200 calories so when I switched back to the diet it had little to no effect. Unfortunately I believe I will have to really work my butt off for the rest of the pounds but can't complain about the 9.5lbs I lost. :)

  3. Thanks for letting me know! I will let you know how I do at the end of the month I plan on doing it every week tue, wed, thur then regular the rest of the time not so much calorie count but portion control :) we will see what happens!

  5. So was sceptical, but would try anything that looks healthy and didn't starve myself. I started last Monday at 197lbs and after 1 week im down to 189. It works, its easy and you don't feel hungry. It balances your blood sugar and removes cravings for sugar and salt. I'v asked all my friends to just try it for a week and see how they do. I'm in for another round this week. Plus, I'm startin the Insanity workout. Should be fun.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you start insanity, dont limit your calorie intake this much. That excercise program REQUIRES you to actually double your calori intake to build muscle. If you do this diet along with insanity, its going to kill you.

      Delete
    2. Very True! When first did Insanity, I only took in my recommended calories of 1600 a day and didnt lose any weight. I did it again with the correct amount of calories (almost double the original amount), and saw amazing results!

  6. That's good to hear. Sometimes I actually found it difficult to each that much by the second and third day!

  7. I did this diet a couple of weeks ago. T be completely honest...I was starving & had no energy. I lost 8 lbs and gained 3 back. I was going to keep going with it but didn't. I plan on doing it this coming week and staying with it for the 3 on 4 off for a couple months. I did it the first time to prove to myself that I could, now I need to do it to get back on my goal!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was exactly the same way! Starving with no energy...maybe it's because I only need to lose 15? I also lost 8 and gained back 3. BUT that was 2 months ago and I've kept the 5 off! Maybe I'll do it again here soon.

      Delete
  8. Is there anything on the toast or tuna on day 3?

And what do you think the effects of spacing out parts of each meal through the day? So the same amount/type of food, just not grouped into 3 meals, maybe 5? Just wondering if you've had any experience with that!

    Thanks, glad it worked!

    1. On day one, today. I halved the peanut butter for breakfast. Half on the toast, the other with the apple as an afternoon snack. Also, I had crackers with the tuna for lunch instead of more toast. I haven't been hungry at all, but I also drink tons of water. I sliced and froze the banana to dress up my ice cream. So basically three meals and two snacks for me. Just the way I like it! Hoping this will work for me as a jumpstart to my fitness goals.

  14. As a Registered Dietitian, I am looking at this plan and it is ridiculous! It does not offer enough calories needed for the day. This is likely going to leave you hungry which could lead to binging. If you lose 10 lbs in a week, 1/2 of that is water weight and as soon as you go back to eating your "normal" diet, I guarantee you will gain it all back. Bottom line: Diets Don't Work! I could go on, but I will get off my soap box. My advice, if it sounds to good to be true, it is. For permanent weight loss, it's going to take some lifestyle changes and physical activity.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree! This is not nearly enough to keep my full! Instead of ice cream wouldn't yogurt be a better way of giving you the dairy. This whole thing seems crazy.

      Delete
    2. Seems like it works as a jumpstart for many people (including myself...lost 7 pounds initially, down 20 after 3 rounds). Three days of restricted calories is not going to kill your metabolism; in fact, it generally does quite the opposite. This diet has enough protein to sustain your systems for three days. Plus, I would venture a guess that most people who are seeing results from this know that they also must make healthy changes to thier lifestyle and eating habits overall. Bottom line: diets do work, negativity does not.

      Delete
    3. This diet is based on chemical reactions, that is why you have to eat the ice cream, it´s not about the low calorie intake but about the chemical reactions that these foods combined make inside your body.

  15. My mother had told me the same thing as well that if I lost it that quick it would not stay off. I continued to maintain a 1200 calorie diet for the rest of the week with Sparkpeople.com which I love, and I haven't gained a pound back. However, I've always had a place where I level off, so to speak, and don't loose or gain. It's just about getting to that place for me. When I did sparkpeople.com they had me limited to the same amount of calories but I was limited to loosing 2 pounds a week. And yes a lot of it is water, which was a big part of my problem due to hormones. I will be doing this diet again here soon and see how it goes the second time around.

  18. I agree with the Registered Dietitian; this diet is ridiculous. Diets work if you stay on them, but as soon as you go off of them, you will gain the weight back. So unless you plan to eat the diet listed above forever, or limit yourself to 1000-1200 calories a day forever, then good luck keeping the weight off. It's not a diet, it's a freaking lifestyle!! When will people get that?? It's not that hard of a concept!!!

    2. I saw this diet many years ago. It was specifically formulated by a cardiologist only to be used for bypass patients who needed to lose alot of weight very quickly in order t undergo open heart surgery. Its not recrecommended for everyone.

      Delete
    3. This diet IS formulated for those needing for whatever reason to take some weight off quickly. It's not meant to be used for unending rounds. That is when it becomes unhealthy. Once you become less carbohydrated addicted, and in tune with your body, you should for optimum health, return to a lover caloric intake, and simply use your head when it comes to good carbs vs bad carbs, and keep a weekly exercise routine. You don't have to go to a gym, or a training camp. It's not rocket science. You MUST move your body to burn calories. Our metabolisms are furnaces. You MUST fuel a furnace properly to have it run for a long time, or it koncks out. Easy peasy comparison. Just use common sense.

    4. I understand everyone has their own opinions just like everyone has there own experiences. But I hate seeing people slam things that are working for some people who are using the system correctly just because they feel they are more educated and think that gives them the right.you don't need to be negative informative if you feel the need but not negative what works for one doesn't always work for the whole due to everyone's individual lives. And to me it seems most are trying to just get on the right track with being more healthy and fit bashing how they do it will not help your cause on helping people make the change to a healthy form of living.

  21. Lifestyle change and a healthy diet, go hand in hand. A lifestyle change is about adding other heathly life styles changes (cardio, weightlifting). I think the diet is ok! Everyone should watch their portion control, no matter what type of food it is. & then of course once your down to your goal weight, start exercising more to build muscle. Of course working out means eating more, but as long as its not more calories than burned (portion control) Everything will level out. Its about sticking with it, and it always will be about that. So for someone to critize that concept, I dont think understands "lifestyle changes"

  22. I did this "diet" with my mom this summer and I did lost about 5 pounds in the three days but my mom only lost 3. I switched to a healthier lifestyle about two years ago (working out and eating healthier) and my metabolism has sped up a lot. The whole time I did this diet I was starving!!! I cheated on the third day because I was feeling light headed and nauseous. My mom didn't feel hungry but she has a much slower metabolism which might be why she didn't lose as much. Needless to say, I agree with the dietician, it is not enough food if you have a decent metabolism. It was miserable and eating that much cottage cheese in one sitting is terrible just FYI.

  28. I did this diet for 2 weeks. Stuck with it which was hard with my daily routine and lifestyle. I lost 15 lbs. That was 3 months ago. I have not gained it back. It actually pushed me over the hump I had trouble getting over. I did have trouble with the 3rd day simply because I did nto get home till late and the time between what I hade for lunch and dinner was a little too long. I did feel good the rest of the time and actually had energy. I am getting ready to be off work for 2 1/2 weeks and will be trying it again. I feel really good with the 15 lbs off and according to my doctor everything is fine. For health reasons I need to lose another 10-15lbs. Hope that stays off as well. I love food! 29. This diet actually works but you will feel hungry the entire time. It's a diet they give to over-weight patients needing to lose a bunch of weight quick so they can have surgery. If you don't like the grape fruit fresh, you can also drink unsweetened grapefruit juice. Also if you don't like cottage cheese (blech) you can switch it out for another 1/2 cup of tuna. Drink A LOT of water and understand that this diet is not meant to be done long term. The paperwork my dad got on this diet from his doctor said to do it for 7 days then take 2 days off and never do it longer than 2 weeks. Good luck!!!

  33. I tried this diet a couple of months ago, and didn't lose much--only about 4 lbs in the 3 days, but I only have about 25 lbs total to lose. It probably doesn't help that I usually subsist on about 1300 cals/day. Plus my metabolism is probably slow! It seems that the more you have to lose the more successful it is. I've heard it called the "3-Day Military Diet". -It's been around for many years.

  36. Hi Everyone! I knew this diet as the "cardiac diet". I did this diet with my best friend and we lost 6 lbs by the third day. We realized that the key to the diet was the severe caloric restriction so we continued restricting our calories to 1,000 calories during the other 4 days of the week. Within 6 months we lost about 50 lbs each. They strange thing is that about a year after starting the diet we both had to get our gall bladders removed. It may very well be a coincidence but the calorie restriction is so severe that it may have thrown our systems out of whack.

    1. When I do restrict my calories on a regular basis I always stick to 1200 which is what sparkpeople.com recommend for my weight and height. 49. Elizabeth- I appreciate you posting this diet and also for keeping up with the comments. I've read through each comment and applied them to my situation.

The one comment you didn't answer directly was the coffee and tea substition. I am a devout Mormon and therefore I obstain from drinking tea or coffee. The last site you recommended for substitutions offered several alternatives, but the only one that would work in my scenario is the sugar free hot chocolate.

I went shopping yesterday to start the diet, and since I didn't see your last comment I substituted the coffee/tea with crystal light, no sugar, minimal calories (5 calories) energy mix. I chose this for the low calories and high caffeine (which I can have caffeine even though uninformed popular belief on Mormonism thinks otherwise).

Anyway, I started this morning. I have 45 pounds to lose and hope to use this "crash diet" to get me going in the right direction. The dietitian is correct about creating a healthy lifestyle, but sometimes we need a jump start to get us going in the right direction. Anyone can do three days and hopefully with some immediate results it will motivate me to find the right lifestyle to carry on.

Again, thank you for posting this and happy eating! ~James

    1. James,

Thank you for your interest and kind comments. I firmly believe the only reason for the coffee or tea is to help you loose water weight quickly and jump start your metabolism, although I can't be 100% sure. So I would think your choice would do the same thing to jump start the diet just not help as much with the water weight. here is a list of things I found that are suppose to help you loose water weight:

Bananas, apricots, avocados and raisins are rich in potassium, which helps regulate your body’s fluid levels and relieves water retention.
Green vegetables, seeds and nuts are high in magnesium, which also helps relieve water retention.
Foods which are high in fiber such as whole grain cereal, whole grain rice and cabbage help with digestion, and relieve water retention and bloating.
Yogurt also helps with digestion, and helps to reduce water retention.
Ginger tea is a natural diuretic that can help with several health issues, including water retention.

I did not exercise a lot during this diet because of the low calorie intake even though the blog I read it on recommended it. I think its dangerous to restrict yourself to so few calories and then work out to the point of exhaustion. I did leg lifts and light exercises while on this diet, nothing major though. Good luck!

  62. I tried this diet a few months back. I lost approx 6 lbs in the first day and a half. But I was so starving by then, I had to give it up. I became light headed and nauseous. I'm a nurse by profession and knew that I was not getting nearly enough calories to function in a day.
I've switched to a 1200 calorie/day diet, Zumba and Spinning classes. I feel so much better about myself!

    1. So, I completed my 3 days today... First thing first, I enjoyed doing this diet... I didn't feel hunger or weak and I worked out during all 3 days for about an hour... I am definitely doing this again... In total I lost 3.6 lbs. which isn't much for some... But it was for me... It gave me my headstart and willingness to continue eating smaller portions and drinking more water... I strongly recommend it, its worth it! :)

  75. I am finishing up day 2 and it's been pretty brutal! I even started watching my calories and exercising weeks before starting ( lost 6 lbs.) I thouht I was hungry at the begining stages of that process...this is much worse! I also have little energy...starving and get headaches...although headaches are probably from caffeine withdraws. I will finish this out but probably wouldn't do it again. I think sticking with smaller portions..every few hours...and exercising is a much better idea for me! I do hope this yeilds some amazing results for all the will power it has taken me..ha!

  77. Good Morning! I weighed 240 as of Friday and I started this on diet on Saturday. Day 1 was easy, day 2 I struggled with a migriane but was a trooper and got thru it (I seriously think is was due to the lack of caffine, I eat lots of chocolate!) by the end of day 2 I was fine and I enjoyed the vanilla ice cream at the end of the evening. Day 3 was actually pretty good! I was proud of myself for having the will power!! So on Tuesday I went for a check up and I had to get weighed, I was super excited when the scale read 234.2 (and that was with clothes and boots on!!!) I came home and jumped on my scale here and it read 229.8!!!(no clothes) Heck Yay!!! Thanks so much for bringing this diet to my attention, all the items that are required I love to eat so it was no problem. Leaving out Chocolate is something I will have to get used to, but with results like these who needs chocolate!!

  79. Good morning, just wanted to put my 2 cents in, if I may. Started day two this morning and am down 3.2 lbs. I am happy about that but I seem to be hungry alot if I don't drink my water. I think we all understand that this isn't the healthiest diet, but keep in mind that it is intended to be used for only 3 days. That in mind, it's not a bad jump start to a healthy way of eating. Thank you for this blog, I was looking for a current place to post on this topic, and this seems like a perfect spot! :)

  80. Good morning again, just wanted to give my stats today. This is the morning of day 3 and I am down 2.6 more lbs. from yesterday. I started at 247.0 and am now at 241.2 in 2 days. So far, so good. Hoping to reach the 10 lbs by tomorrow morning, just to be able to say that it does work. Also want to add in that I have also been drinking diet soda in addition to the water and black coffee and/or tea, so not really sure if the "chemical thing" is valid, if I'm still losing this much weight. Anyway, will post again tomorrow morning with the total stats from the 3 days. Thanks for your time!

  86. google (3 day military diet). its healthy. but if you want to loose weight and keep it up, its a lifestyle change. you cant deprive yourself of everything you want, then you will binge one day. calorie confusion is very effective. its win win .. you get to have your cake and eat it too (not the whole thing, just a few bites). i went from 298 to 175 ( 10 months) using this and going to the gym 5 days a week with just walking and free weights.

  96. These fad diets don't work. If you want to lose weight you need to eat healthy food, drink plenty of water, cut out the crappy processed food, you also HAVE to exercise. If you burn off more calories than you eat you'll lose weight. I tried many different things, after having 3 children I was over weight and unhappy, I finally had enough, so I started off slow with yoga, then added Zumba, after losing a bit of weight I added kick boxing, I have dropped 8 pant sizes and now wear a 3/4, I am strong and healthy. I still allow myself treats, I just make sure I have 90% healthy food and if I want chocolate, I do. You can do it if you really want to. Just make a change from crap food to good food and get out there and move, even if its just walking.

  109. I did a diet much like this in the late 1980's, it was called the Rotation Diet. You followed the exact 3 day plan and then ate regularly for the rest of the week. It instructed you to do the diet for two weeks, take two off and start it again for two weeks. I remember losing the weight but I also remember that I drank a ton of water. Best wishes for success to those who are following it.

as far as the nuts I'm not aware of any but I would say something of equal calories. I believe there is soybean butter, you might try biscoff spread, but it contains sunflower oil so I don't know if that will be an issue.

  111. I think the reason so many people have a problem with this diet is because as Americans, we are accustomed to consuming HUGE and UNENDING amounts of food at any given meal. Other people around the world do not consume foods is such large quantities. It's not going to kill you to miss a few meals a week. For those who gained all their weight back it's probably because you exercised no self-control during your 4 days off. The American diet is one of the worst in the world, and the food industry put additives in their food to keep you coming back, which is why you feel like you are going to die if you miss a meal. Most people can't even make it through one day of fasting because of the way they are accustomed to eating, that's unfortunate. As you get older you need to eat less food, less junk food, less meat, more fruits and vegetables, drink more water and move more.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The severe calorie restriction might actually make your body retain weight if you did it any longer. I think the on off thing is why you continue to lose because your body doesn't get use to it and think its starving.

The vanilla ice cream in the Military Diet can be substituted for 1 cup of fruit flavored yogurt or apple juice. A good non dairy substitute is strawberry, vanilla or banana flavored almond milk. Do not substitute chocolate almond milk.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At a weight of 98lbs that puts you at a BMI of 20.5 which is normal and good. If you were 80lbs you'd only be a 16.7 and wouldn't even be on the BMI chart.
When I was in high school and your age I was anorexic and did not register on the BMI scale. I thought it was nice to be so shockingly thin and I had a sense of control over my life. I eventually learned to love food and it takes more control to eat healthy and eat the things you love without going over board than it does to deny yourself everything to make yourself so thin. I know because I've tried both. Looking in the mirror and realizing you are beautiful at a healthy weight is an accomplishment I hope you achieve.

    1. I'm currently 138lbs so all together I've lost 20lbs. I never updated because the last 10lbs I lost were a result of calorie restriction and not the 3 day diet. I feel like it was a good jump start to the diet especially for women because of the water weight we pick up.
I find each site has something new to offer but I've never been a big fan of blogs/website with video's instead of pictures because of the time it takes to get through all of them. I also find going through websites like Dr. Oz and the Mayo Clinic and what they think of such diets is much more beneficial.

  130. So reading through all the comments, sounds like some mixed reviews. It's also a tad bit sad that they keep asking for substitutions when the link is posted in the above post and ALL throughout these comments! sheesh. Anyway. On day one here. I am a sad 225lbs at a height of 5'6". A few years ago I lost 60lbs with HCG and now I'm stuck. I have known about this diet for a while as my mom introduced me to it in high school. She worked in a doctors office then and was given the diet by one of the doctors there who had her 20 year old daughter on this diet for 2 months with a result of 50lbs lost. If a female doctor will encourage her daughter to do this diet, then I think it's just fine. I think all of us American's could eat a little less and be just fine. Anything in moderation is a wonderful thing. Like 1 slice of pizza and not 10! Here's to all you lovely men and women out there partaking in this adventure of being healthy and feeling good. I wish you all luck. I will post on Monday with the results of my weigh in. I'm going to try hard not to weigh myself until then.

  136. I was put on a low GI eating plan by a dietitian. I lost 15Kg (I'm on the metric system)in about 2 Months. I have been naughty for the last 3 months and gained back 5Kg. I started this diet just to give me a boost before going back to the Low GI lifestyle. I have just had my day 3 lunch. I haven't weighed myself every day. Will only do that tomorrow morning. I haven't been hungry, irritated or any of these things. I actually feel great. My reason for posting is that the amount of food on this diet and the amount of food on my low GI plan doesn't differ that much. The low GI does have a bit more, but not that much more.

  137. I have struggled with my weight my whole life. Except for the fact that I weigh 240 pounds...I'm very healthy. Perfect blood pressure and more than perfect cholesterol...no health problems. I eat and lead a healthy life style. My doctor sent me to a dietition. I followed her menu plan for a whole week hoping that I would see a weight loss. She told me I wasn't eating enough calories which Seemed ridiculous to me...what did I know. I followed her higher calorie diet. I gained 8 lbs in one week. I tried the three day diet..which allowed me to eat more than I usually do but much less than she had me eating and I lost 11 lbs. C'mon people. If you want to lose weight and stay at a decent weight...you can't eat 1800 calorie a day...I don't care if it's string beans or cookies. 3500 calories equals a pound. It's math. You eat less you lose...you just can't eat less, lose, eat more and then stay thin. You eat less you weigh less...you eat more you weigh more.
